Communication & Negotiation - About
Why are communication and negotiation essential to success?
Effective communication is essential to successful farm tenure. Relationships between buyer and seller - or between tenant and landlord - can be enhanced if the parties improve their communication skills, make communication goal-oriented, approach communication with a positive and creative attitude, and work to reduce barriers to understanding. All aspects of your communication - including your spoken word, your body language and facial expressions, and your email and other written documents - are laying a foundation for the quality of your relationship and the success of your negotiations.
No matter how fair your proposal, how sound your business plan, or how solid your values and abilities, you will not succeed if you can't communicate your ideas well. Because all communication is a two-way street, you do not have complete control over the outcome. However, you can set yourself up for success by being as effective as possible with your own communication. By being clear, thorough, and responsive, you will build trust which sets the stage for successful lease or purchase negotiation and a good working relationship for years to come.
